Liverpool is the home to the world’s second oldest Chinatown (San Francisco is the oldest). Chinatown is a vibrant, brightly coloured part of the city, dominated by the largest archway outside China, built in the year 2000 by Shanghai craftsmen and Liverpool architects.

It is noticeable that the physical Chinese cultural landscape has been constructed around the existing neo-classical architecture of Victorian Liverpool, creating a zone which can be interpreted as either cultural hybridity or cultural conflict.
